REAL-TIME SYSTEMS

Real-time systems have proliferated over the past few years. Today, real-time computers are to be found embedded almost everywhere, from toasters to cars to fly-by-wire aircraft and spacecraft. It has been pointed out that many cars today have more computer power than did the Apollo 11 spacecraft that first landed man on the moon.

Two key aspects differentiate real-time systems from general-purpose computers. The first is the critical need to meet deadlines; the second is that many of the applications are life-critical. The total failure of a personal computer for some interval of time might cause annoyance but do no lasting damage; the failure of a real-time computer can kill people. These aspects have an impact on the design and evaluation process of such systems.

This text covers both architectural and software issues in real-time system design and evaluation. Among topics discussed are real-time task allocation and scheduling algorithms, communication protocols, real-time programming languages, databases, and fault-tolerance techniques.
