Managing Digital Resources in Libraries
"Librarians are among those whose working lives are most radically affected by the tremendous explosion in networked information sparked by the Internet. For them, advances in information technology generate shockwave after shockwave of opportunities and problems that must seem like a fierce and long-sustained onslaught on their own self-image. How would you react if a technology juggernaut like Google suddenly declared that its mission was something you thought society had entrusted to you alone, which you had been doing well for centuries ('to organize the world's information and make it accessible and useful')? This little anthology, a missive from the land of librarians, lets you in on what it's like.... What librarians are thinking, doing, and planning in the brave new world of digital resources-in a time of shrinking budgets, and against an undercurrent of popular opinion that questions why on earth, in today's culture of information overload, do we need libraries at all?"
-lan H. Witten, PhD, Professor of Computer Science, New Zealand Digital Library, University of Waikato, New Zealand
"An interesting compilation of reflections on today's issues in managing digital resources. The contributions range from the theoretical to the more practical. Major emphasis is on the management of electronic journals, although a chapter on the use of PDA technology gives the collection a greater breadth in terms of formats addressed. This collection also has a global reach, addressing projects outside the United States. The range of solutions offered for handling digital resources, from various viewpoints, illustrates that no one method for managing digital materials is dominating the scene yet. The chapters addressing copyright issues, licensing concepts, and issues surrounding bibliographic control are particularly strong. The case studies address situations found in academic, health sciences, and public libraries."
