Introduction to Machine Learning

This textbook describes the state of the art in machine learning (ML), and through generous use of many exercises and examples gives the reader a firm grasp of the concepts and techniques of this rapidly developing subject. A sub-domain of artificial intelligence, ML has produced a wealth of information which is currently only available from a disparate range of reference books, research reports and conference proceedings. In this book the results of a number of leading researchers - Mitchell, Michalski, Winston and the author, to name some - are explored and presented in an intelligible and original way suitable for undergraduate study.

Although the book develops the necessary theoretical basis of ML, it begins with an overview suitable for readers lacking a theoretical background. The technical concepts of ML are illustrated using Prolog, and the book shows how some of the complex problems inherent in using logic programming as knowledge representation may be handled.
